GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1): What’s All the Hype About?
According to the CDC, approximately 40% of adults in the U.S. suffer from obesity. Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of adiposity and is often associated with other metabolic disorders, such as cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. A common goal for many individuals is weight loss.
However, achieving weight loss can be challenging, especially when considering the barriers and responsibilities of daily life. This is where GLP-1 comes into play. This hormone is crucial for maintaining glucose (blood sugar) balance and has been shown to inadvertently suppress appetite and food intake.
Research indicates that GLP-1 can:
Prevent weight gain
Reduce interest in food
Currently, approximately 70% of women using GLP-1 medications are doing it for weight loss rather than for diabetic purposes. Ozempic is the most popular brand name and has become a household name in medicine. It is arguably the first viral drug of its kind, making it a staple in contemporary health discussions.
Stay tuned for more information next week on the evidence supporting the effects of GLP-1 and the reasons behind its rising popularity!
